Chiropractic therapy is the third largest doctored profession in the U.S. behind medicine and dentistry. At any given time, 6% to 12% of the population utilizes chiropractic care in the U.S. and Canada. UFE (Urine Feces Everywhere) received a correspondence from a chiropractic patient asking that we look into the hand sanitation practices of chiropractors. She stated that when she visits the Chiropractor he never sanitizes his hands or the adjustment table. The doctor always changes the face paper on the adjustment table, but she observes no other form of sanitation. “Shouldn’t I be a little nervous about the previous patients the doctor saw before he worked on me?” she asked. Having moved several times in the last few years, I have seen several chiropractors and they don’t seem to follow any type of cleaning protocol. UFE.com decided to look into her claims so we called chiropractic offices to query their sanitation practices, executed an exclusive internet chiropractic patient survey, and sent patients to chiropractic offices to see for ourselves if the doctors are practicing responsible sanitation practices.
In a UFE phone poll of chiropractic offices, 61% stated that their doctor used hand sanitizer before every patient. 39% of the offices answered that the doctors always washed their hands between patients. All the offices stated that they sanitized the adjustment table between each patient or on a set interval each day.
The exclusive chiropractic patient survey, which was placed on the UFE website showed results very different than the responses received from the chiropractic office survey (see results displayed above). It concluded that more than half of the chiropractors are not regularly cleaning their hands between patients. It is obvious that the offices know that hand cleaning is important; at least, they know what to say publicly.
The patients that were sent to various offices to observe hand and adjustment table cleaning returned responses similar to the internet survey. Many chiropractors are just not washing or sanitizing their hands between patients. With the exception of the changing of face paper, the adjustment tables are not being sanitized on any visible regular basis. It could be possible that the adjustment tables are being cleaned behind closed doors, but many offices, usually large chain practices have (looks like an assembly line) many tables and patients in one room, so it is easy to see that table sanitation is non-existent. One patient noted that the large corporate owned office, with many adjustment tables in one room, had only one sink in the entire office: the sink in the public restroom. Sanitizer was available, but remember, hand sanitizer becomes useless unless you physically wash your hands after every three or four applications. In this office and others we have observed the chiropractic physicians didn’t even have the option to wash their hands with soap and water. Without the regular hand washing, the constant application of hand sanitizer is pointless and unsanitary.
It is obvious from this survey that chiropractic physicians know the proper sanitation regimens they should be practicing, but there is a definite lack of compliance. The UFE team sent email correspondences and placed phone calls to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), International Chiropractors Association, and the National Chiropractors Association. With the exception of the ACA, our calls and email correspondences were not returned. The ACA referred UFE to a 2008 chiropractic office article that stated that the doctors need to clean their hands and offices because many types of potentially harmful pathogens can be found on surfaces throughout a chiropractic office.
The take-away from this survey is simple. Many chiropractic physicians are practicing irresponsible office hygiene practices, but you would never know it by talking to them. At the very least your chiropractor should be using hand sanitizer (not the first choice of the UFE team) and sanitizing the chiropractic adjustment table between patient visits. There are many bacteria, viruses, etc., such as MRSA, a highly infectious and potentially dangerous staph bacteria that can be transferred from person to person or table to person. Our recommendation would be that your chiropractor wash their hands with soap and water, then dry their hands with a disposable paper towel between each patient. If your chiropractor is one of the close to 50% that isn’t sanitizing their hands and office equipment correctly then possible you should find one that does. After all, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of Chiropractors.
